Are student loans like indentured servitude?

I found this interesting article in Dissent.  Jeffery Williams argues that the nature of student debt binds students for years afterward.    He argues that the debt reinforces class discrimination, and counteracts the notion that the U.S. can be a meritocracy.

Although Dissent is very left-wing venue, I think that Williams raises some very interesting points.

What scandal at Butler University?

yes it is. It's similar to having a job one hates and not being able to leave for fear of not having health benefits. the pressure of paying student loans somewhat negates the freedom and choices gained from earning a degree in the first place.

Butler U tried to sue a blogger for defamation after he criticized butler admins for the handling of the demotions of former UWO COLS Dean Michael Zimmerman and Music Dept Chair Andrea Gullickson. Turns out the blog was run by their son. Butler has dropped the lawsuit but is pursuing on-campus disciplinary action.
