Computers hurt education

This is an interesting article complaining about the adverse effects computers have on education--it seems quite relevant to much of the discussion lately about d2l and other educational technology:

This article should be sent to Rep. Underheim (a proponent of replacing teachers with computers).

Bryan,

Thank goodness Underheim didn't win election as the head of DPI! As his visit to campus a few weeks ago show, he is still bitter about this loss!

Perhaps we can elect a legislator who is more sympathetic to education next time around.

I couldn't agree more!

We were close in '04, and I believe it's time for a change in '06!!

After discussion last night with the Oshkosh Common Council, I spoke with Gregg about the computers and education topic (he again brought forth his idea of replacing teachers with computers as a primary instructional method in the K-12 school system). I shared with him this information and also emailed him the article. I will post any information I receive back from him.

A lot of the workshop focused on the state budget. I'd like to point out that Gregg again pitted K-12 education vs. the rest of the state as a solution to increased funding to local government units and the UW System. For a moment, I thought I was back at the budget presentation in Reeve Union!

Even Stew Rieckman (everydayeditor.blogspot.com) was stunned by the hostility exhibited by Underheim, in particular. Perhaps he is already thinking he is going to lose the next election and is mentally preparing to move on and find a new job.
