Graduation Rates in WI

Graduation Rates for Wisconsin Posted by Hello

This jpg was taken from the education trust website. I posted information about Oshkosh earlier in the week(see below), and was interested as to where we fit in the state of Wisconsin. Not too impressive. It looks even worse if you compare UWO's record to what the website calls "comparable institutions."

All in all, the data paint a bleak picture of higher education in the U.S. and Wisconsin. In most measures, we are doing worse than 10 years ago.

Bernie,

I agree with your sentiments completely. As far as I know, UWO is trying to address this problem by increasing the number of academic councellors available to students. The NYTimes article linked below suggests that is an important tool in increasing retention rates -- students need personal contact and guidance.

At a meeting last month, Chancellor Wells was talking about a program called the "graduation project" which is (will be?) an outreach to students who reached senior status but didn't finish. It will get them back to get that degree. There was even talk of getting support from System for the program.

That is what I know about our own attempts to help students graduate, but as I have suggested earlier, the other budget cuts and the increasing enrollment seem to work directly against improvement.
